One writes out of a need to communicate and to commune with others others, to denounce that which gives pain and to share that which gives happiness. One writes against one's solitude and against the solitude of others. One assumes that literature translates knowledge and affects the behavior and language of those who read...One writes, in reality, for the people whose luck or misfortune one identifies with - the hungry, the sleepless, the rebels, and the wretched of this earth - and the majority of them are illiterate.
...How can those of us who want to work for literature that helps to make audible the voice of the voiceless function in the context of this reality? Can we make ourselves heard in the midst of a deaf-mute culture? The small freedom conceded to writers, is it not at times a proof positive of our failure? How far can we go? Who can we reach?
...To awaken consciousness, to reveal identity - can literature claim a better function in these times?
....
Our effectiveness depends on our capacity to be audacious and astute, clever and appealing. I would hope that we could create a language more fearless and beautiful than that used by conformist writers to greet the twilight. [emphasis mine]
— Eduardo Galeano (translation by Bobbye Ortiz)
from Days and Nights of Love and War
Ingredients
3 C all purpose flour
2 TBL baking powder
1/4 C. sugar, plus extra tsp. for sprinkling the tops
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 C. vegetable oil
1/2 C. soy cream (rice or soy milk makes a fine sub)
3/4 C. rice or soy milk plus 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet (we use parchment).
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Add the oil, soy cream, and rice milk. Mix until just combined; the dough should be clumpy and not sticky. Even if there is still a light dusting of flour, that's okay.
Drop by 1/4 cupfuls onto the greased cookie sheet and pat the tops just a bit to round them out; sprinkle with a bit of sugar. Bake 12-15 minutes, until slightly browned on the bottom and firm on the top.
VARIATIONS
Berry scones: fold in 1 1/2 C. of fresh berries
Chocolate chip scones: add 1 tsp. of vanilla extract to the liquid ingredients, add 2 TBL of sugar, fold in 1 C of chocolate chips
Maple walnut: add 2 tsp of maple extract to the liquid ingredients, add 2 TBL of sugar, fold in 1 1/2 C of walnuts
I've also added the following combinations:
apricots/almonds/almond extract
dried cherries/lemon zest

I had a period where I felt okay with handstand; then I hurt my sacro-iliac joint and stopped doing handstand altogether for at least a year. When I came back to doing handstands, I was always very nervous. And then terrified. And pretty much every time I've done handstand for the last few years, it's a terrifying experience for me. I get extremely disoriented (as you are expected to) and feel like a piece of seaweed just waving about - although in the air, not supported in water.
About a month ago I thought that this might be due to the general shape of my body - pear. I don't see anyone else who looks like me doing handstand - or really, any yoga. So there aren't models for me, or anyone else I can talk to. I just figured that handstand would be something I would always struggle with. Because let's be honest, there's always something, isn't there? So, I was telling some of this to my yoga pal, and basically that even though I have all this fear, every time I have the opportunity, I do it anyway. I figure if I keep doing it, maybe some day, something will change. My teacher Denise says, "It could happen." I'm open to it. Yeah, sure.
So, that particular night, of course we got the opportunity to do handstand. I rarely have a problem kicking up (with a partner); it's the staying there that is difficult. So, I got up, and my teacher came over and pressed on my feet. I'm sure I've had someone do that before, but this time, I felt so plugged in. The image that came to mind was a battery that connects at both ends. And I didn't have that terror. I felt so solid in my core, and my legs weren't waving about like seaweed. WOW. What a revelation.
Last weekend in my Sunday morning class, we were working on shoulder openings in preparation for padungastana danurasana - wheel pose from your stomach, with your arms going up over your head, instead of alongside your body. We had to do a handstand against the wall, positioning ourselves as far or as close as we felt comfortable doing, so we could do a backbend while in handstand. AND I DID IT.
At the end of the class, my teacher Denise said that the progression of my practice has been so beautiful to watch; just steady and incremental. And I've very much felt like that. It doesn't move by leaps and bounds. Even when I have these breakthroughs, I think externally they don't appear to be spikes.
Today I went to my teacher Rainey's 40th birthday celebration. 40 sun salutations. I wonder how sore I'll be on Monday.

Yesterday I went to an organizing meeting for a group that is trying to get the word out to approve Referendum 71.
For those of you who don't know, in WA state, we have domestic partnership. It's not marriage, but the last legislative session, the lawmakers passed the last bits to make it equal to marriage in the state. It still doesn't have any of the federal rights, because ... well, DOMA and all that pleasant shit. Anyway, there is a group of right-wing bigots who were pissed off that this last round of rights were passed and got a petition together to put this to the electorate. The confusing part is that the way referenda work in WA state, if it's on the ballot, the person filling out the ballot is voting to approve or reject the law that was passed the last legislative session. So, even though it was a conservative group that got this on the ballot, now that it's ON the ballot, we want to approve it (unless you don't support same-sex marriage rights, in which case, we need to chat).
So, we have about 6 weeks total to get the word out. Apparently many people who support domestic partnership and/or same-sex marriage in our fair state didn't even know this was on the ballot. And there are people who support this legislation, but think that voting to reject it is supporting us. So, this is going to require a lot of work in a very short period of time.
Please consider donating money, volunteering to phone bank, door knock, or in any other way get the word out about this. You can find out more at Approve71.org.
This is the same issue as Prop 8 was in CA; this is the first time our civil rights have been put to a vote. Any way in which you are able to help will be greatly appreciated.

I went to Lake View Cemetery yesterday with
zabira. We had a fantastic time and I had to document some of the more interesting tombstones we came across. We did not seek out Bruce and Brandon Lee's grave sites, but perhaps another time I will go look for them. We did run across Denise Levertov's grave quite by accident, though. Believe it or not, despite living less than a mile from this cemetery and having lived in Seattle for 16 years, I'd never been inside it. There were many touching memorials the living had left for those who had died before them.
If you click on the picture, it will take you to more pics from the cemetery.
