It's been a long time since I've posted anything related to Brokeback Mountain, but I thought some of you might find this amusing.
Apparently, there is now a video with live actors to Willie Nelson's Cowboys are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other [warning: video will start playing when you click on link]. The resolution isn't very good, but the beginning of it with Burt Reynolds is pretty funny.

I am saying this with a little bit of trepidation, but I seem to have turned a corner in terms of my cold being over. Yippeee! Yesterday I felt miserable (same as every other day pretty much); I had a raging headache last night. This morning my head feels clear, for the first time since early last week. I can fairly easily breathe through my nose (whee!), and my sinuses aren't aching (nor is my nose dripping like a leaky faucet). I am hoping that it lasts all day, and that I feel well enough to go to my writing class tonight.
In the spirit of sharing, here are two music videos for you today:
Cheney's Got a Gun - will start playing when you click on it
Cowboys are Secretly - video montage from Brokeback Mountain to Willie Nelson's rendition of the song
ETA: And also, a link from
dirtylibrarian: check out the celebrity photos - especially the before/after ones. Wow.

I am back at work today, thanks to the miracles of modern chemistry - namely, Advil Cold & Sinus. I am not 100%, and I feel rather shaky, but it's good to be sitting at my desk and not on my couch. I think the decongestant made me have crazy dreams last night, though.
Also, I thought y'all were tired of my gay cowboy obsession so I stopped posting stuff even mildly or tangentially related (like Willie Nelson's gay cowboy song). ETA: You can listen to it HERE if you don't have iTunes (like me). TowleRoad is where I get most of my info. He posted a funny bit about a Jill Sobule song about Cheney and Whittington (there is a feed on LJ, I just can't get the dumb tag to work). You can read about it here - and there is a link to the MP3 there so you can even listen to it.

I know some of you are tired of my rehashing of the movie/story, but I thought this article was worth posting, because he is saying some of the stuff I've been saying. There are spoilers if you haven't seen the movie/read the story yet.

The word of the day today is: cancrine.
It particularly made me think of
sparkle_shortz.
This weekend my plans are fairly minimal. Going to Paula Poundstone tonight; having a friend over tomorrow to make cards. Sunday am avoiding anything to do with the Superbowl and possibly going to see Mrs. Henderson Presents.
What are you fine folk doing?
The word of the day today is: cancrine.
1. Reading the same backwards as forwards, palindromic. For example,
"A man, a plan, a canal: Panama." (letter cancrine)
"So patient a doctor to doctor a patient so!" (word cancrine)
2. Crab-like.

Can anyone actually watch this - it will take you to a page where you can click on the video to watch. All I'm getting is sound - no images.
Malcontent has Jake and Heath on Oprah - for anyone who wanted to watch. It's not the whole show, and doesn't really include the women, which is a bummer.
Andy from TowleRoad has a nice interview with the producer of Brokeback Mountain.
It glamorises nothing. It serves no cause. It is a stark and sad film from a great director with two superb performances, and a slow and encompassing sense of the sap and sorrow of life. It creates a truer image of things than you expect to see these days. It's a story about little people, ordinary people, who are mowed down like grass by the thing that makes them individuals, and are not less heroic or less tragic for the choices they make.
Last night my girlfriend was griping about my current obsession - Jake Gyllenhaal. She told me I was acting like a crushed-out 16-year old. I told her I was in touch with my inner 16-year old. At some point late she apologized for giving me shit about it, but I told her it was a win/win, because I got to obsess over something for a short time, and she got to give me to shit about it (something she likes to do). We both thought it was funny.

TowleRoad has posted about a dance remix a dj made ...
Personally, I find it cringeworthy, but it does have its amusement factor.

I am in Nicola Griffith's yahoo! group, and today she posted the following question (in response to a discussion about whether or not Brokeback Mountain was a "gay cowboy" story or not):
What is a "gay" or "lesbian" film (or book)? Is it (1) a book or film with dykes or gay boys in it? Is it (2) a book or film centered on gay or lesbian themes/concerns? Is it (3) a book or film revolving around an issue that could be seen to be "universal" but has particular relevance to the LGBTI community (whatever and wherever you define that to be)? Is it (4) a film or book written/directed by a lesbian or gay man? Or (5) none of the above?
I haven't seen "Brokeback Mountain" but it sounds to me as though it might fit in box number 3, with the notion of Forbidden Love being the universally applicable theme but the facts that they're two boys (as opposed to, say, first cousins or people of different religions) having particular relevance to the gay community.
People often say to me: Oh, you write lesbian books. Well, no. I write books with lesbians in them, and that lesbian (and others) enjoy reading. And, oh yep, I'm a dyke. But the books aren't *about* the experience of being a dyke. They're not *about* coming out or the struggle to remain true to one's lesbian self in the face of persecution (etc. etc.).
So how do you (all) define a "lesbian" or "gay" piece of art (or piece of schlock, for that matter)?
( and my response )

I posted a link to an extremely right-wing wacko article about Brokeback Mountain in
postqueer the other day and don't feel like bludgeoning the kind people over there with my obsessiveness. But I have to post here and say that - what the FUCK? There is an article in the NYTimes about the Christian Right, and their response to the movie. And it just pissed me off, because they are reporting this like this is real fucking news or something. It's the problem I have with the whole, "I'm a Christian and I'm oppressed" bullshit logic.
Here's a tasty choice quote for you:
"I think it has a pernicious effect on society," said Mr. Snyder, who has a doctorate in film studies from Northwestern University. "Hollywood projects a leftist homosexual agenda, which goes along with radical feminism, and a misunderstanding of what Christianity teaches."
I didn't realize Hollywood had any agenda, other than to MAKE FUCKING MONEY, hand over fist if at all possible. It just smacks of conspiracy theory, and grrrrr .... I am just left babbling and incoherent.

I never posted about my weekend, because I just wanted to obsess about Brokeback Mountain. Thanks to those of you who participated.
I went to a very nice party on Friday night, and stayed up much later than I would have liked. I got awoken by a telemarketer at 8:30 in the morning. Thankfully I had the presence of mind to say to him, "Please put this number on your DO NOT CALL LIST." He then said, "Can I ask you one question?" To which I replied, "No! You may not!" Sheesh, the nerve.
Saturday we saw The Family Stone, which was really wonderful. I would highly recommend it. Then had a quiet afternoon before heading down to see Kiki and Herb. They were brilliant. Fuckin' brilliant. And I have to say, I agree with Kiki when she asked, "Why can't people just be nice to each other?" I wonder the same thing every day.
Sunday was consumed with Brokeback. What can I say? I hope my obsession wanes quickly, because my girlfriend is not amused by it. *sigh*
Oh yeah - I also managed to read Rainbow Road by Alex Sanchez. It's the third book in his YA series about three gay teens. In this one, they have just graduated from high school and take a road trip across the country together.
Also, this morning I went to the dentist and got my teeth cleaned. Now they are sore (or rather, my gums and mouth are generally). Boo-yeah.

I did go see Brokeback yesterday. Thanks for those of you who discussed the story with me on Friday.
I am continuing to drive my gf crazy by talking about it. I kept dreaming about the movie all night. I can't stop thinking about Ennis, mostly. He was so pragmatic, and yet I wonder how much of his own response to everything was driven by fear. And then the combination of violence in his relationship with Jack ...
